Telehealth for Rural and Remote Practice-Watch on NITV, Rural Health Channel on VAST or watch live online

On Tuesday 29th January the Rural Health Education Foundation will be broadcasting a live panel discussion on telehealth.Airing immediately prior to this panel discussion is a documentary, Stories from the New Bush Telegraph: The Impact of Telehealth which showcases stories from clinicians and patients who have been using telehealth for a while; How teleoncology is linking Mt Isa with Townsville Hospital; Cairns Diabetes Telehealth Clinic connecting with Badu Island and other Torres Strait islands; rural communities and remote area clinics in South Australia accessing specialist support and the impact this has had on a farming family; and how Southern NSW Medicare Local has been driving the widespread uptake across their region.

Following the documentary Dr Norman Swan will lead a live panel discussion on the impact this technology is having for patients in rural and remote Australia accessing treatment; what it means for the primary healthcare teams involved; and the resources available that will help you get started.  The panel will discuss different models being used; myths and misunderstandings; what they wish someone had told them when they were starting and the difference it is making to their practice and their patients.

Program participants include: Ms Carol Bennett - CEO, Consumers Health Forum; Prof Isabelle Ellis - Professor of Nursing: Rural and Regional Practice Development, University of Tasmania; Dr Ewen McPhee – General Practitioner, Emerald QLD; Dr Sabe Sabesan - Director of Medical Oncology, Townsville Hospital QLD; Ms Di Thornton - Director of Nursing, Pinnaroo Hospital SA; and Dr Angus Turner – Ophthalmologist, Lions Eye Institute, Nedlands WA (via video teleconference).

How to view:  There are two ways to view the live program:

1.     Register and watch the webcast - the webcast is a simultaneous screening of the live broadcast where you can submit questions & participate in polls whilst watching on your computer.

2.     Watch the program live on the Rural Health Channel (channel 600 on VAST)

A satellite dish and a digital VAST set-top box is required for access. In metropolitan areas this is very limited. If you do not have access to VAST in your home or at your local clinic or centre, Rural Health Education Foundation’s satellite viewing sites across Australia have access and their set-top boxes have recording capabilities.
